Yeah, I can sympathize with Jim... even though it all happened in a blink my heart was racing the entire time. Glad James is OK!! Keaton's getting lessons this summer too :)

Wow... sitting here with tears rolling down my face. Read my post here. http://maggieandjim.wordpress.com/2009/05/26/my-little-fish/
What I left out of the post was when I had packed up the vest and we were getting ready to leave. I was inside with Thomas and Jim was standing next to the pool talking with someone while James was playing on the steps. Jim said he looked down to see James step backwards off the step, and his little head bob for a second before going under. He also said that time stood still. Here was James, kicking his little legs as hard as he could, arms stretched out to daddy, eyes big as sand dollars, and a look of ultimate fear on his face. It took him a second to realize that he wasn't wearing the vest, and he bent down and pulled him out. Luckily he hadn't reached the bottom yet (which was about 5 feet) and he was able to just reach for him.

Jim wouldn't hand him to me. He was so scared himself that he would not let go of him. Of course, everyone was applauding James at what a great job he did. I hadn't seen it so I had no idea the extent of anything, and just gave him a kiss telling him that he did a good job kicking. It wasn't until later that night when Jim broke down and told me how scary and terrifying it was. I got out of bed and went to lay down with James. I couldn't stand it.

Just this morning James told me, "Mommy, I went under the water."

He's learning to swim this summer. No doubt about it. He's learning.
Whew... now I can breathe. Sorry for such a long comment.
